Use These Ideas to Deal with Homeschooling Nay-Sayers
Everyone who decides to homeschool their children will run into at least one person, maybe more, that tell them they shouldn’t homeschool. The decision to homeschool, isn’t an easy one to make, and often isn’t popular. However, the choice in how your child is educated is entirely up to you, so you need to decide ahead of time how you will deal with homeschooling nay-sayers.
A common objection from those who oppose homeschooling is that you lack the qualifications to instruct your own child, even if you hold a Bachelor of Arts in Education. I think this is nonsense! As a parent, you have been educating your child since they were born. You and your spouse were the ones who taught them how to talk, walk, and use the restroom independently. So, if you could teach them those skills, why wouldn’t you be capable of teaching them how to read or do math?
Some people may try to discourage you from teaching your child at home, saying that you are not qualified enough. But I think that is a much easier task than having to manage a classroom of 18-20 young children and cover multiple subjects every day. That is a hard job; teaching one child to read is not. You have what it takes!
One of the common objections you may face when you are considering homeschooling is that your kids will miss out on socialization. But I wonder if you really want your kids to pick up everything they are exposed to at school. Not all of the lessons are taught by the teachers. Many are learned from interacting with other kids.
If you are considering homeschooling your child, you may encounter some arguments that claim homeschooled children are poorly socialized and isolated from their peers. I disagree with this claim, and I believe that homeschooled children are more socially adept than most of the children in public schools. Homeschooled children can interact with people of different ages and backgrounds, not just with those who are in the same grade as them. Public schools create artificial and unrealistic social environments that do not prepare children for the real world. In real life, you will not always be surrounded by people who are exactly your age or share your interests. You will have to deal with diversity and complexity. Homeschooling can help your child develop these skills.
You may also feel intimidated by the idea of homeschooling your child, thinking that you need to be an expert in every subject or have a lot of resources. Don’t let these fears stop you from pursuing what is best for your child. You can use homeschooling as an opportunity to learn together with your child, to explore their passions and interests, and to customize their education according to their needs and abilities. You don’t have to know everything; you just have to be willing to learn and grow with your child.
